Air traffic controllers are people trained to maintain the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic in the global air traffic control system. Air traffic controllers apply separation rules to keep aircraft at a safe distance from each other in their area of responsibility . The ATC profession is consistently regarded around the world as one of the most challenging careers. Training courses for ATCOs comprise the basic training course for ATCAs, then a further theory module of air traffic management (ATM); followed by intensive practical training in a simulator. Successfully completion of these courses leads to a period of on-the-job training (OJT) at an operational ATC unit.
